OUR STORY

Jaco Beach, a beautiful place we call home.

Hello! My name is Jessenia Sequeiro Velasquez. I am from a small farm near the town of Sebaco located in the northwest of portion of Nicaragua. I am one of 13 children, 10 brothers and 2 sisters. Growing up in a small area with a big family was very challenging. My whole family works very hard on the farm to make sure there is enough money throughout the year. We grow a fruit we call a gourd (fresca natural) on the farm and this is my families main source of income. When I was growing up, my father gave me what turned out to be the best piece of advice anyone has ever given me. He told me I had a choice that needed to be made, either I was going to stay on the farm and join the other women in the family assisting with the farm duties, as well as caring for over 30 nieces and nephews. Or I could pick up, leave home and try to make something of my life. As a young girl growing up on a farm and had never really traveled before. This was a very scary option but I was up for the challenge because I knew I could help my family more by moving away. After a lot of thought, I decided to leave the farm and set out on a new adventure that I hoped would give me the opportunities I never could have had otherwise. I found a job in a restaurant and for a number of years I worked as a waitress/cook. Being able to work and send money home was truly a dream come true.

During this time, I made learning English a priority, which I learned on my own with no schooling. I was also able to educate myself in other ways, learning how a restaurant works, ordering, stocking and handling the money. With all this new information, I started to really think about my future, how far I had come and where I really wanted to be.I was fortunate enough to become friends with the owner of an already successful restaurant. After speaking with him and telling my story, I was able to start my business. I was given a gas grill and the rent was free for the first 6 months!!! I was then able to run my own hot dog, hamburger and special seasoned pork strip business. My successful business also allows me the ability to employ each one of my brothers. Taking turns working in the restaurant for extra money for the family. I knew I could be very successful and give my family in Nicaragua the support they needed. I have owned my own business in Jaco, Costa Rica, where I currently call home, for 5 years now. Being able to send even more money back to my family. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and thank you for being such loyal customers. God Bless
